Your Motivation

Into the WIld (image credit)

in 2007, a movie called Into the Wild was made. It followed the story of Chris McCandless, a searching youth who yearned for something more from his life than a good job, steady money, and a path chosen for him. He decided to live in the Alaskan wilderness. His passion for beauty and the endless search for finding peace eventually drove him to a small bus in the middle of nowhere. As you watch the next scene, what are some of the things you believe motivate Chris in his quest?

Click on the picture to watch the scene

Think about some of the following questions. How would you answer them?
1. How do you motivate yourself? In what ways do you find passion?
2. What is your passion? If you don't know, how could you go about finding it?
3. What are some things you can only experience by doing alone? Are they bad, good, or a mixture of both?
4. What are some things that we can learn and use to help motivate others from the movie clip?

What Would You Do?

This week, we're talking about the influence of money and happiness in life. Many people believe that money can buy a happy life, while others believe it is something more.

Can money bring true happiness?
What about you? What brings you happiness?

Recent psychological research has suggested that money isn't the key to happiness, but gratefulness. To learn more about this, you have the option (you don't have to...) to watch this video from Benedictine monk David Steindl-Rast. Though money can bring happiness for a short time, gratefulness leads people to a prolonged sense of well-being, as if they are directly effecting the world and its overall goodness. This leads to a feeling of connection and empowers people to work harder, think more creatively, and increase their ability to live overall.

Take a look at this 2 minute exercise on gratefulness.

What does it suggest that you do to practice gratefulness?
How often should you do the exercise?
Do you believe something like this is effective in changing your outlook on life? Why or why not?

Technology and Addiction

What do you think are the best parts of technology? What have you enjoyed most about being able to use the Internet, cellphone, or computer? When do these things become a negative thing in life?

"Just... one... more... minute..."
Recently, many people have enjoyed the latest and greatest technology so much that it has affected the way they live their lives. Read this story from Breaking News English to find out more about Internet addiction. Answer the questions when you finish.

1. How would you feel if you couldn't have Internet access for a month?
2. In what ways has your life changed since using the Internet, social media, or Skype?
3. What is "tech overload" and how do we prevent it?

One way to find out if you're addicted is to take this twenty question quiz. Check your answers at the end.
Do you agree or disagree with the results?
Do you believe Internet addiction is real? If so, is it negative? Why?

Going Out and Eating Healthy

Task 1: Before the Scene

You will watch a scene of a few friends in a restaurant. But, before we see the TV show, have a discussion about some common food choices you make. List a few food items in each category.
Dairy                                                                     Sweets
Vegetables                                                            Meat
Fatty                                                                     Salty

Task 2: During the Scene

Watch the scene and have some discussion using these questions.

What does “in the mood” mean?
List a few ways they described the food in the scene. Which are positive? Which are negative? Also, be sure to list what is included in the meal.

Lamb                                                                                     Salad

Fish Salt and Pepper

Task 3: On The Street Interviews

Now you’re going to watch a scene where people are interviewed about their ideas on food. Make sure to take some notes on each of their ideas.

Jessica: What did she say was healthy to eat?

Maiko: What did she say was unhealthy to eat?

Cortyan: What is her ideal diet?
What food is she cooking tonight?

Matt: What is his ideal breakfast?
Does he like spicy food?

Task 4: Your Ideas

What is the best breakfast, in your opinion? Be sure to explain why!

Success: What Does It Mean?

What is your road to success?
This week, we will address the topic of success. There will be two tasks to comment on, so look at each of them carefully and write as fully as you can. You can also respond to others comments and ideas. Just remember some "net-iquitte:" polite discussion, clear ideas, and clever comments.

Task 1:

People think of success in many ways. Some people define success through their jobs and advancing int their fields. Others see it as a healthy relationship with family. Still others have many ideas of how to define success for their lives. Look at the following quote and decide if you agree or disagree with it.
Success is personal and unique to you. Don't let anyone tell you how to measure your success. Only you can do that. - Danielle Buckley

Task 2:

Is success only definable as a subjective experience? Why or why not? Harvard Business Review did interviews with over 4,000 business makers and entrepreneurs. Dr. Moses Simuyemba, a prominent African motivational speaker and Internet marketer and entrepreneur, has interviewed dozens of people in his quest to help them realize their own successes. Go to his website here and read a few. Are there any that you agree with? Are there any you disagree with? Why?
